Bring One Voice to Your School

​For school groups considering a way to highlight and navigate the challenging course of culture and community this year, One Voice: A Black History Narrative can be that answer. Excluding shame-based or politically motivated history, JDew’s online, in-person, or hybrid cultural experience is an eye-opener for where we’ve been as a country, and where we are now. We all still have the ability to decide where to go from here.

Martin Luther King Jr. often used biblical references in his speeches to appeal to the moral and religious values of his audience. For example, in his "I Have a Dream" speech, he quoted the Old Testament when he said, "I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together." This quote comes from the book written by the prophet Isaiah.

King also frequently referenced the teachings of Jesus, particularly the idea of loving one's neighbor and turning the other cheek. In his "Letter from Birmingham Jail," he wrote, "We will match your capacity to inflict suffering with our capacity to endure suffering. We will meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will, and we will still love you." This passage is inspired by Jesus' teaching to love one's enemies, as recorded in the New Testament.
